During Jesus' 3 years of publicly proclaiming the word of God, the gospel of God (like Habukuk before him, "God is still on the throne"), demonstating this message (by the kindness and love of God in action, and his throwing out of unclean (unhelpful) spirits, and interpretting it (the kingdom (reign) of God is like this, and like this, and like that), some Teachers of the Jewish law interacted with Jesus thus: ‘Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!’ Jesus replied, ‘And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? For God said, “Honour your father and mother” and “Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.” But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is “devoted to God,” they are not to “honour their father or mother” with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: ‘ “These people honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.” ’ But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. For out of the heart come evil thoughts – (murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft), false testimony, slander. These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.’ Matthew 15:2-9, 18-20 NIVUK
In Romans ch10, while discussing how Jews will get "saved" from certain destruction, Paul says:
Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: ‘The person who does these things will live by them.’ But the righteousness that is by faith says: ‘Do not say in your heart, “Who will ascend into heaven?” ’ (that is, to bring Christ down) ‘or “Who will descend into the deep?” ’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? ‘The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,’ that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: if you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, ‘Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.’ For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile – the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!’ But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, ‘Lord, who has believed our message?’ Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. But I ask: did they not hear? Of course they did: ‘Their voice has gone out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.’ Again I ask: did Israel not understand? First, Moses says, ‘I will make you envious by those who are not a nation; I will make you angry by a nation that has no understanding.’ And Isaiah boldly says, ‘I was found by those who did not seek me; I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me.’ But concerning Israel he says, ‘All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and obstinate people.’
Obedience that comes from faith, as distinct from the mere ritualistic obedience that isn't born of faith, but a kind of technology, ritual, incantation or spell,
The scriptures say that by believing in your heart, & speaking with your mouth "Jesus Christ is Lord", increasingly, in every area of life (including words, deeds, and emotional responses)" you are saved, but, those who follow the mentality of the Judaisers say that this is not enough… you also have to give assent to
our special rituals, or
our theories that make us feel safe, secure, & comfortable in our lazy, simplistic thinking..
we want to put our extra little rules, & understandings up as essential as well! (counter to Romans chapter 10:9ff, & Romans ch 14, and the whole book of : Galatians, and Acts 17….)
God, speaking from heaven to Peter (& James & John)... gives them the way forward: After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, ‘Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters – one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.’ While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!’ When the disciples heard this, they fell face down to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. ‘Get up,’ he said. ‘Don’t be afraid.’ When they looked up, they saw no-one except Jesus. Matthew 17:1-8 NIVUK
This is in line with what Jesus said himself to his disciples: "Why do you call me 'Lord, lord' yet not do what I say?"
Jesus, in his teaching to his disciples on forgiveness, tells a parable to them about a king's forgiveness that is explicitly related to his own entering into the same spirit of merciful thoughtfulness to those around us. Not a unilateral transaction, but a covenental relationship… all to do with what the first servant did, & did not, do, in expressing the spirit of the master:
‘Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold was brought to him. Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt. ‘At this the servant fell on his knees before him. “Be patient with me,” he begged, “and I will pay back everything.” The servant’s master took pity on him, cancelled the debt and let him go. ‘But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins. He grabbed him and began to choke him. “Pay back what you owe me!” he demanded. ‘His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, “Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.” ‘But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened. ‘Then the master called the servant in. “You wicked servant,” he said, “I cancelled all that debt of yours because you begged me to.
